The Hague, Netherlands – In order to set up a Civil Military Interaction (CMI) seminar Mrs. Sera Orzel-Gaeta visited the CCOE from 24 to 25 July 2014 in The Hague. The seminar will be led by Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) and executed in the facilities of the CCOE mid of November 2014. Mrs. Orzel-Gaeta is Head of the CMI Branch at SHAPE which is located in Casteau, north of the Belgian city of Mons. For CCOE it is another opportunity to demonstrate its ability as event facilitator – now in The Hague.
The intent of the seminar will be to have an educational event for NATO and outside actors focussing on the topic human security: human, cultural and environmental protection.
The visit started with an Office call with the new CCOE Director Colonel Roel Been and continued having dinner with CCOE staff. That Social event took place in a cozy restaurant close to CCOE facilities in Delft. Mrs. Orzel-Gaeta and CCOE staff enjoyed introducing oneself in an energetic humorous atmosphere of the setting sun in The Hague’s vicinity.

The next day started with a briefing in order to provide a Tour d’horizont of the CCOE. The briefing included CMI/CIMIC topics and course landscape. During the briefing issues were recognized and addressed which depicted commonalities and the benefit of supporting each other. As example the mandatory need to integrate CCOE NATO accredited CIMIC courses in job descriptions of personnel employed in various NATO assignments.
Mrs. Orzel-Gaeta was pleased with the briefings and said about the CCOE: “It’s a very professional organization and it certainly lives up to its name of Centre of Excellence. It’s a fantastic facility that you have here near The Hague. I am extremely impressed, not only with the facility but with the professionalism of all the staff who I have met over the last 24 hours.”
Afterwards the frame conditions for the upcoming CMI seminar were discussed. The seminar is planned in CCOE facilities in The Hague for mid November 2014. It will take one and a half days and is a result of the cooperation of NATO’s both strategic military commands: Allied Command Operations (ACO) and Allied Command Transformation (ACT). The topic – human security – might play an important role during the upcoming NATO summit in Wales.
“It is a pleasure for us to facilitate that interesting and important seminar at the facilities of the CCOE and we enjoy the uncomplicated friendly cooperation with Mrs. Orzel-Gaeta.” said CCOE Director Colonel Roel Been.
After having addressed the challenges, capacities and administration for the seminar, Mrs. Orzel-Gaeta had a tour through CCOE facilities before she left back “home” with her parting words: “I had a wonderful time. Thank you.”
